An acre-foot is enough water to cover one acre of land one foot deep—about 326,000 gallons. It is a common unit used for water supplies, representing enough water to supply about three households for one year.

03 / WATER YEAR 2025 ACCOUNTING

How was banked water used this year?

Participating agencies deposited 74,200 acre-feet of water into the Water Bank during Water Year 2025. After accounting for natural groundwater movement that supports nearby rivers and groundwater systems, the Water Bank grew by 39,600 acre-feet.

WHY DOESN’T ALL OF THE STORED WATER REMAIN IN THE WATER BANK?
A small portion of stored groundwater naturally moves through the aquifer, supporting nearby rivers and groundwater systems. The Water Accounting System tracks these contributions to help ensure Water Bank balances remain accurate and transparent.
WHAT IS A LEAVE-BEHIND REQUIREMENT?
When water is withdrawn from the Water Bank, a portion of that water is required to remain in the aquifer to support the long-term sustainability of the Water Bank. Because no water was withdrawn during Water Year 2025, no leave-behind requirement was applied.
